A handful of local grocery stores have started creating special hours for seniors and the most vulnerable at their locations starting this week.
"Starting Wednesday, March 18 we will open the store at 8 a.m. for seniors 65 years and older," Parker's Independent Grocer stated on its Facebook page Tuesday.
"Please note that we do not encourage seniors to get out of the house but due to demand we will offer the service. 8am-9am 65 + only."
Sobeys has also responded.
"Let's make shopping a little easier for seniors," stated the local Sobeys Facebook page.
"Starting this Friday, many of our stores will be devoting the first hour of operations to those most vulnerable and require extra attention, particularly seniors."
Both No Frills locations on McKeown and Lakeshore are also creating early hours for seniors.
"Starting this week, Mike & Lori's No Frills on McKeown is dedicating the first opening hour - Thursday and Fridays from 8 to 9 a.m. - of shopping to our customers who may need assistance and considerations: seniors and people with disabilities. 65+ only," the local No Frills Facebook page stated.
"The move has been prompted by the unprecedented demand in our supermarket over the past week, which has seen many elderly and vulnerable people in the community missing out on vital items they may need when they shop," No Frills continued.
Meantime, Shoppers Drug Mart locations have also announced they will dedicate their first hour of operation to customers who need assistance including seniors.
