Local driver lucky to be alive after overpass rock throwing incident

'The rock smashed through his transport windshield hitting my husband and covering him in glass'

The OPP in the Burks Falls area is investigating three incidents where individuals were throwing objects down onto oncoming vehicles from the Pickerel and Jack Lake overpass on Highway 11.

Tara Lamorea’s husband was one of the victims.

Her husband was traveling in his transport heading home to North Bay from Toronto when all of a sudden a rock hit his vehicle.

“The rock smashed through his transport windshield hitting my husband and covering him in glass,” recalled Lamorea.

“Luckily he is a seasoned driver of 19 years and was able to handle the situation and safely get his rig off the road.”

Fortunately, he was okay.

The Lamorea’s are also very thankful as their 12-year-old daughter was initially going to be in the passenger seat.

“She only decided at the last second to stay at home that night,” she said.

“As you can see this could have been a much worse situation.”

That incident occurred just before midnight last Saturday.

Meanwhile, other reported incidents occurred around noon the week before and around midnight last Saturday, where it was reported suspects were standing on the overpass and discharging fireworks at passing cars.

No vehicles were damaged during those two incidents, however, the OPP is taking this investigation very seriously.

“Police are continuing to investigate and any person with information regarding the person(s) responsible for these mischiefs should immediately contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or their nearest police authority,” stated an OPP release from Monday.

Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit information online at www.tipsubmit.com where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.

Lamorea hopes the OPP find those responsible before someone really gets hurt.

“We would love to see some justice brought to this situation and to do anything we can to help anyone else stay safe,” she said.
