Near North Crime Stoppers coordinator Jean Lemieux is in his final yar of service.

It's been another banner year for Near North Crime Stoppers.

“Since its inception in 1988, NNCS has received tips, leading to significant police success in recovering illegal drugs and stolen property, with a total value exceeding $62 million," says police coordinator Jean Lemieux.

"In 2023 alone, these anonymous tips resulted in 24 arrests, contributing to an impressive cumulative total of 1,789 arrests. As of December 31, 2023, NNCS has received 868 new tips, with 78 per cent of them submitted through our website, indicating its growing popularity as the preferred method for reporting crime-related information.”

This is the final year for Lemieux, following over two decades as Police Coordinator for Near North Crime Stoppers.

“NNCS continues to markedly improve the safety of our communities through strategic partnerships, awareness campaigns, and the enablement of law enforcement to remove proceeds of crime, weapons, and dangerous offenders from our streets," adds Brandon Fenton, Chair of the Board of Directors.

"Our continuously growing statistics are a testament to the effectiveness of Crime Stoppers programs. Following a post-pandemic ramp-up period, NNCS is back in full swing organizing community events for fundraising and awareness."

The group operates solely on community donations.

"Our approach underscores a strong community commitment to safety that wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our key partners and generous sponsors across the Near North region.”

January is Crime Stoppers Month around the globe and this year’s theme is “BE A CRIME STOPPER”, encouraging Canadians to report illegal activities anonymously to their local Crime Stoppers program.

The foundation of Crime Stoppers is a partnership between the community, law enforcement agencies, and the media. Crime Stoppers works to educate the public and create awareness of reporting illegal activities to promote the Canadian values of safety, empowerment, and inclusion.

Anyone with information on any drug-related, break-and-enter, assault, or other crimes can report anonymously by calling 1-800-222-TIPS(8477). Also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, is the secure online tip form here.

Community members who wish to support the Near North Crime Stoppers program, can do so by donating on its website, or by contacting our office directly.
