A number of local ice arenas are closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic threat.

BayToday has learned that as of Monday, March 16 at 5 p.m. Memorial Gardens, Pete Palangio and West Ferris arena will be closing.

"All ice and meeting room permits (through until April 1) will be cancelled and refunds will be issued to those with a credit," stated a memo to ice user groups today.

"Permits scheduled for after April 1 will be reviews at a later date once more information is received on this status of COVID-19."

Other arenas have also prematurely closed due to the situation. The Powassan Sportsplex pulled out its ice late last week while the Sturgeon Falls Community Complex was closed today.

Ice rentals at many area facilities were few and far between after Hockey Canada halted all minor hockey events from practices to games for the rest of the season.
