The Nipissing District Housing Corporation has been convicted on three charges related to a fire at the Edgewater apartment building in August of 2003.
The charges relate to door closures and inspections in the apartment building located at 365 Lakeshore Drive. Justice of the Peace Mike Kitlar said there was sufficient evidence to convict the corporation.
Prosecutor Bill Brunton asked Justice of the Peace Kitlar for a $20,000 fine, and defence lawyer Ian McLean asked for a fine of $3,500.
Justice of the Peace Kitlar ended up imposing a $5,000 fine for each of the three charges for a total of $15,000, and a $1,250 victim surtax charge.
The corporation was given 90 days to pay. The maximum fine for each charge is $50,000 or a year in jail.
