Paul McLean believes hockey moms deserve a little love and recognition after a busy hockey season.
The owner of Skaters North sports store admits it was his wife’s idea - a hockey mom herself - to create a contest to find the best hockey mom in the North Bay area.
“The Moms are the quarterbacks of the families, they are the ones that keep it together,” said McLean.
“The kids and dad ask what is for breakfast, we have to go, when are we leaving, but they [Moms] are the ones that make sure they are packed and the kids have every last thing that they need as they go away out of town on a tournament and they have got the cooler bag packed up with food and snacks.
“The dads are more or less the drivers and the cheerleaders but the heart or the core of it is the mother that is why we wanted to have this contest.”
McLean says nominees need to send in a write-up of 50 words or less along with a photo to win a prize pack worth more than $250 along with the recognition.
The contest started late on Friday and already the nominations are rolling in.
“Whoever wins it, it is really nice to read some of the little messages people have been talking about why they are nominating someone so I have read some great stories already and it is not just moms it is foster parents, it is grandparents, it is a kind neighbour,” said McLean.
“So hockey mom is just not the mother of the child it is like a broader term, like a den mother.”
McLean thought the contest was ideal as well with Mother’s Day just around the corner. To check out or to nominate someone go HERE.
