Update: now open, Highway 17 closed west of Verner following fatal crash

An accident near Markstay has closed Highway 17.

Update 4:55 p.m.

On June 13 shortly after 12 p.m., members from the Nipissing West Detachment of the OPP, Markstay-Warren Fire Department and the Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services responded to a single-vehicle accident on Highway 17, Markstay-Warren.

The driver of the vehicle, a 74-year-old-person, from Sudbury was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Name and gender of the victim were not released by police.

The highway was closed in both directions for approximately four hours, while members of the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement Team (T.I.M.E.) process the scene.

Highway 17 is closed in Markstay following a crash over the noon hour.

The Ontario Provincial Police tweeted about 12:30 p.m. that around 32 km of roadway was closed between Highway 537 in Wahnapitae and the Highway 535 turnoff in Hagar, following a crash.

It's estimated the highway won't reopen until around 5 p.m.
