Highway 11 open after 'serious collision'

The accident occurred where the Province is planning a 2+1 highway initiative expected to start this summer

OPP re-opened Highway 11 North, near Sand Dam Road in both directions, at 4:30 today, following what is being termed "a serious two-vehicle collision" this morning.

At 10:38 a.m., North Bay Detachment OPP officers responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles, says a news release.

"The investigation is on-going with the assistance of the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement Team," says Constable Nathalie Muirhead. "Further information will be provided when it is available."

The highway was closed from Thibeault Hill to Highway 64 north of Marten River for almost six hours.

The accident occurred where the Province is planning a 2+1 highway initiative expected to start this summer. A 2+1 highway is a three-lane highway with a centre passing lane that changes direction approximately every two to five kilometres.

Two potential locations for the 2+1 highway pilot have been identified, While both sites will be assessed, the design and environmental assessment for Highway 11 from Sand Dam Road to Ellesmere Road (14 kilometres) near North Bay's city limits, will be prioritized.
