High schools to compete at Nip U math contest

Nipissing University, in partnership with the Near North District School Board, is hosting a Mathematics competition for local Grade 9 and 10 students on Friday, December 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in room A246.

Students will be competing in teams to solve five mathematical problem sets, each under a time limit. Teams will be assigned at the beginning of the contest and will endeavor to have members from each school.

Participants will receive a short lesson prior to each of the three main problem sets, designed to review the topic and provide hints.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. Special individual prizes will also be awarded for students who answer particularly difficult or tricky questions during the lessons

The organizers expect 80 -100 students to participate. The following Secondary Schools are taking part: Almaguin Highlands, Chippewa, Northern, Parry Sound, Widdifield and West Ferris.
