Environment Canada reports a heat event is expected to begin today and continue through Friday.

A hot and humid airmass is expected to arrive today. Maximum daytime temperatures of 29 to 31 degrees Celsius are expected, with humidex values of 36 to 38. Overnight minimum temperatures will be 17 to 19 degrees Celsius.

A heat warning is in effect for:

  • North Bay - West Nipissing
  • Powassan - Mattawa
  • Greater Sudbury
  • Temiskaming Shores - Temagami

A cooler airmass may arrive by Friday night.

Extreme heat can affect everyone’s health.

The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Heat stroke is a medical emergency! Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you or someone you are caring for has a high body temperature and is confused, has stopped sweating or has become unconscious.

Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.

Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle.

Watch for early signs of heat illness (feeling unwell, fatigue, thirst, headache) as these can rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies. Move to a cooler environment immediately, such as a shaded or air-conditioned space.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
