Happy Birthday, eh!

'Canada is a wonderful country, it is the best country in the world and every Canadian knows that'

Canada Day revellers were amazed by the size of the massive Canadian flag that was draped across the Kiwanis Bandshell, in celebration of Canada’s 157        birthday.

Among the people who gathered to celebrate this day in history was Sushila Kc.

Formerly from Nepal, Kc has made Canada her home for the past two and a half years.

“There is nothing I don’t like about Canada. The people are very nice, the weather, places to visit.”

Kc sums up her thoughts on what Canada means to her.

“Freedom,” said Kc with a grin.

With the flag used as a backdrop, representatives from all three levels of government praised Canada and the people who make up this country, as part of the official opening ceremonies.

“Canada is a wonderful country, it is the best country in the world and every Canadian knows that. Today is our chance to brag, and celebrate what we have,” pointed out Nipissing—Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota.

“As your trade minister, I travel to a lot of corners of the globe, and everywhere we go, they say the same thing in this turmoil of a world that is today, they look across the ocean and see this beacon of hope, this beacon of light that is Canada. We show them every day, every week, every month we show them what it is to be Canadian, so continue with this proud sense that we have,” said Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli.

North Bay Mayor Peter Chirico also welcomed the crowd, making a special presentation to two deserving elementary school students on this 157th Canada Day celebration.

The North Bay Canada Day committee invited students from all the area elementary schools to participate in a poster challenge, by creating a collage, based on the theme “Canadian Pride.”

They were challenged to create a collage depicting how people, places, and events of the past 157 years have shaped the nation.

Grade 8 student Maeve Mailloux along with Grade 1 student Ayden Wilkinson each received a plaque depicting their work, with copies to be hung at City Hall, along with a new bike for their efforts.

What’s a birthday celebration without cake?

Following the speeches, people were invited to join in and receive a cupcake decorated in their choice of red or white icing.

People then strolled the waterfront, enjoying live music, and taking in the numerous vendors, and various demonstrations including one from the Fire Department, free admission to the Dionne Quints Home, a Regatta race, free admission to a museum exhibit, the KidZone, and face painting.

A fireworks display was scheduled to wrap up the day.
