A new program hopes that cash incentives will prompt northerners to come up with fresh ideas to boost the tourism industry.

The Northeastern Ontario “Spark” Mentorship & Grants Program was launched Thursday at the YMCA.

The program’s goal is to inspire entrepreneurs, small businesses, non-profits, and community groups to come forward with creative ideas that will spark new tourism offerings, experiences, and collaborations in the region.

"Selected applicants will receive a $3,000 seed grant, mentorship and additional partner support to help bring their new tourism ideas to life," says a news release.

Past recipients from northern Ontario include a 2Spirit Awareness Week & Gathering, culinary experiences, stand-up paddle board programs, yurt accommodations, pop-up ice bike rentals, floating cafe & events, nature experiences, and yoga retreats.

As part of their efforts to enhance the region's tourism offerings, organizers are seeking ideas that will create high-quality tourism experiences, address gaps in tourism products and services, encourage longer stays and repeat visits, and increase tourism spending throughout the year.

“While challenges remain, we are optimistic about the future of northern Ontario, and it is essential for each of us to contribute to making our region a preferred destination for visitors. We look forward to the journey ahead and working together in partnership to deliver successful programming that will better enable all of us to grow and prosper,” said David MacLachlan, executive director, Destination Northern Ontario.

"Our primary objective for the coming year is to facilitate and support the attraction, development, and retention of a skilled tourism workforce to elevate the customer experience," said Karen Peacock, senior coordinator at Destination Northern Ontario/Tourism Excellence North. "Through initiatives like the 'Spark' Mentorships & Grants Program, we're providing expert guidance and financial support to foster new tourism programs and business opportunities in Northeastern Ontario."

Applications will be accepted until October 29 Following a juried review process, finalists will be invited to a pitch session where three winners will be selected.
