Local paddlers enjoyed a great day on La Vase Portages this past weekend.

The anticipated showers and thunderstorms held off to allow over 40 canoeists to enjoy a great day of paddling and especially portaging with one detour of almost 1400 metres required this year.

“All in all it was a great way to celebrate and relive the Voyageur experience on this famous portage route that crosses the height of land between the Ottawa River and Lake Huron,” notes event organiser Chris Mayne.

Recent media attention helped to bring out the largest group to date for the annual Canoe Day in spite of the weather warnings as many wanted to either show their support for protecting the route or simply learn more about it.

"This is a wonderful little canoe route that is such an important part of the heritage of our community and I think everyone was delighted to have the sunshine come out and see just how beautiful an area this really is," commented Friends of La Vase Portages volunteer and Board member Bernie Stockermans.
