Gail Degagne next mayor of Chisholm

Council members appointed a replacement for long-time mayor Leo Jobin who stepped down due to health concerns

Chisholm Township will have a new mayor to begin 2021 after council members appointed fellow councillor Gail Degagne to the position this week.

Degagne, who joined council following the 2018 election to fill a vacated seat, replaces long-time mayor Leo Jobin who resigned recently to focus on health concerns.

She officially takes on the mayoral duties at the next council meeting Jan. 12.

Also interested in the position was Coun. Nunzio Scarfone, the deputy mayor, who joined council in 2014.

Degagne and Coun. Bernadette Kerr were appointed to their township seats after Walter Ross and Heather Ward stepped down from their acclaimed positions.

Coun. James Gauthier, acclaimed in 2018, and Kerr choose between Degagne and Scarfone. A replacement mayor was needed before Jan. 10 or the township would have been forced to hold a byelection.

A feature interview with Degagne about her vision and priorities for the community of almost 1,300 residents is scheduled to be published this weekend.
