With military precision the 547 Canuck Squadron paraded in front of Brigadier General Marty Galvin (Retired) and the Review Party oversaw the final inspection of the season at the Callander Community Centre Saturday.
The command staff, a dedicated group of officers who volunteer their time, say the parade is an opportunity for the cadets, aged 12 to 18 years old, to demonstrate the accomplishments each cadet has accomplished since September.
The Air Cadet program focuses on eight fundamentals; citizenship, physical fitness, leadership, aircraft identification, aeronautical facilities, airframes, air crew survival, and range/shooting.
Galvin, former Commander 22 Wing/CFB North Bay and Colonel Sean Boyle, current commander of 22 Wing/CFB North Bay both say the program goes far beyond those fundamentals.
“Absolutely our future leaders,” states Galvin.
“Air Cadets is growing leaders for Canada one cadet at a time.
“I mean there are so many great examples Chris Hadfield, and the former Chief of Defence staff (General) Walter Natynczyk and the young CF-18 demonstration pilot that was here two weeks ago - all air cadets all great future Canadian leaders.”
“The kids that do training in the summer and team building are sharp young kids,” agrees Boyle.
“These are definitely our future leaders whether they are in the military or civil sector.”
The 547 Canuck Squadron meets Monday nights from 6:00-9:00pm (September to June) at the Troy Armoury on Chippewa St., North Bay.
