A well-liked former St. Joseph-Scollard Hall student has passed away in relation to Monday’s tragic car accident along highway 17 near the Corbeil Corners.

Matthew Menard, who only turned 20 just over a week ago, was one of two people that perished in the crash.

“Rest in peace Menard, one of the most genuine and nice guys I’ve known,” stated one friend on Twitter.

Menard grew up nearby in Bonfield.

“He loved to fish and play guitar.  A gifted athlete, he played volleyball, basketball and hockey, playing for the Scollard Hall Bears,” his obituary stated.

“He will be forever remembered by his numerous friends and teammates, too many to mention and by his best friend Ty Maurice. Matthew was a graduate of Scollard Hall (2016), and the Electrical Tech program at Canadore College (2017) and was just finishing the Plumbing Tech program at the college, expecting to graduate in May.”

The Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board issued this statement.

"Our deepest condolences are with all the families impacted by the tragic accident on Monday. Our school and board communities are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of one of our recent graduates, Matthew Menard. Matthew was an active member of our school community during his years at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall and he will be missed. Our support team is in place for all students and staff seeking assistance. We will continue to keep Matthew, his family and all those impacted by the tragic accident close to our hearts and in our prayers."

Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Eglise de Sainte Bernadette,  Bonfield, at 11 a.m. this Saturday.

Spring interment will take place in Bonfield.
