In a news release Thursday evening, Mattawa officials admit flooding conditions throughout the municipality continue to "pose a threat to residents" and town officials are closely monitoring the water levels with the assistance of the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
An evacuation centre has been set up at the Mike Rodden Arena and will be open 24 hours per day until further notice. The centre is open to all residents who have been evacuated or are self-evacuating from their homes
Road Closings:
- Gorman Street from Main to Pine Street
- Mattawan Street from Pine Street to Sid Turcotte Park Road
- Bangs Street from Main to Timmins Street
- Timmins Street from Water to Bangs Street
- Brook Street from Highway 17 to Ottawa Street
- A small section at the corner of Twelfth & Bissett Street
The bridge connecting Main Street to Highway 533 is NOT closed.
Meals: May 10th Schedule: (will be updated on a daily basis)
- Royal Canadian Legion Branch #254, 360 Hurdman Street
- Breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. and lunch from Noon to 2 p.m.
- Mattawa Senior Citizens Club, 464 Poplar Street, will serve dinner from 5 to 7 p.m
Town Officials continue to advise that property owners in low lying areas adjacent to the Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers consider and be prepared for the possible evacuation of their homes due to increasing water levels.
- The Mattawa Mental Health Support Centre wishes to advise that outreach peer support is available 24 hours a day during the emergency by contacting 705-744-4567.
- Any resident in need of sandbag support call the municipal office at 705-744-5611.
Meanwhile, due to serious flooding in the area, all bussing in the Mattawa corridor is cancelled for Friday, May 10.
Parents are reminded that cancelled bus routes will not run in the afternoon; any students brought to school by other means must be picked up at the end of the school day.
And Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord says Sainte-Anne and Élisabeth-Bruyère schools in Mattawa will be open to students tomorrow.
"The staff will be happy to welcome students as usual. We encourage residents to limit travel within the community during the day but recognize that some families may want to help their neighbours and thus need to bring their children to school."
The near North Board says , FJ McElligot and Mattawa Public School will also be open to students tomorrow.
