Flood Watch continues for the Lake Nipissing shoreline

'The lake water level has begun to decrease; however strong winds and wave action are a concern while lake levels remain high'

A flood watch continues for the Lake Nipissing shoreline areas in NBMCA watershed including along Parks Creek from Marshall Avenue to the Lake; Chippewa Creek from Main Street to the Lake; and La Vase River from Riverbend Road to the lake as these areas are influenced by high lake levels.

“The lake water level has begun to decrease; however strong winds and wave action are a concern while lake levels remain high,” said Chitra Gowda, NBMCA CAO.

The water level on Lake Nipissing is regulated by dams operated by the federal government. Current water levels can be viewed by searching Station Name “Lake Nipissing” here.

For comparison, when lake-based flooding occurred on Lake Nipissing in May 2019, the water level on Lake Nipissing at North Bay reached a maximum level that is about 50 cm higher than the present level.

Meanwhile, a "Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety" is in place for the Mattawa River subwatershed including the Town of Mattawa; and the Flood Warning has ended, according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority.

“The Ottawa River water level at Mattawa has decreased by around 145 cm from the high water on May 3," said Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. "The water level is returning to near normal for this time of year."

“The water level on the Ottawa River at Mattawa is below the minor flood threshold and is expected to decrease further this week, based on information from the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board.” Caution is urged, as the flows are still high on the Ottawa River.
