UPDATED: Fire guts downtown apartment

Firefighters acted quickly and prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent apartments.

A fire that started around 10 a.m. closed Main Street while firefighters battled to get the blaze under control.

No-one was injured in the second storey fire at 637 Main St. E. said apartment resident Brent Burns and confirmed by a firefighter.

Lyle Hosein rents the apartment that caught fire.

He told BayToday, "My girlfriend went out to get a smoothie and when she returned the place was in flames. I was at work at the time."

Hosein says he has no idea what started the fire, but is concerned about a pet bearded dragon lizard that may have perished in the fire. The couple also have two young children.

The couple were planning on moving at the end of the month and most of their stuff "was in boxes".

Firefighters acted quickly and prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent apartments.

Damage has been pegged at $75,000.
