Susan Fisher, a figure skating official and executive for over 35 years, will be inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame May 2nd at the Davedi Club.

North Bay Sports Hall of Fame Chair Bill Jacko pointed out that Fisher has played many roles as a builder in various figure skating events.

“She has been at various times a technical representative, evaluator, judge, referee and competitions coordinator for local, regional and provincial figure skating competitions since the early 1990s and before that spent a decade on the local club executive,” said Jacko in a release.

A native of Kapuskasing, Susan Fisher arrived in North Bay in 1970 and joined the executive of the North Bay Figure Skating Club in 1982. During her ten years on the board, she was a member of the bid and organizing committees for the 1986 Canadian Figure Skating Championships held at Memorial Gardens and also began to train as a volunteer Skate Canada Judge and Evaluator. Over the years she has continued to train and upgrade, and as of 2020 she can evaluate or test skaters hoping to achieve gold free skate, senior bronze dance and skills and interpretive levels. She is also qualified as a “competitions judge” in a number of different under 19 categories, and as a referee for several interclub divisions.

She has served as the Technical Representative for at least six competitions a year for over 30 years, including Northern Ontario qualifying, All Ontario provincials, Winter Games and synchronized events. The TR is a complex organizational role that requires complete involvement and oversight for at least a four-month period for each competition.

Since 2014 Fisher has been the Skate Ontario Competitions Coordinator which involves introducing the inaugural Skate Ontario Provincial Super Series and the Skate Ontario website.

In 2017 she helped with events restructuring under newly organized Skate Ontario; she is a member of the Skate Ontario Events Committee and continues to play an active role as an evaluator, judge and technical representative.

She is well respected in figure skating circles for her “strong work ethic…fairness…dedication…calm demeanour…willingness to assist … and has the respect of her peers.”

Fisher won the Skate Canada Volunteer Award of Excellence in 2015 and Northern Ontario Volunteer awards in 2010 and 2012.

While teaching at Chippewa S.S. she coached the Scarlet Raider badminton teams which achieved individual and team success at both NDA and NOSSA levels.
