Fear of 'an explosive device' shuts down city street

'Because of what happened during an arrest we shut down the area. We believe there may be some kind of explosive device in the home'

North Bay Police and the OPP are involved in an "active criminal investigation" on Passmore Ave. this afternoon that has the street closed from Lakeshore Drive to Whitney Avenue.

A house on Passmore Avenue in North Bay is the scene of the crime and spokesman John Schultz says they "have identified the need to contain and search a residence, and until they ascertain exactly what they are dealing with, there will be a heightened police presence in this area and police have closed Passmore Avenue for public safety."

Sgt. Aaron Northrup told BayToday that the criminal offense started last night with the arrest of a lone suspect who was in the home at the time.

"Because of what happened during an arrest we shut down the area. We believe there may be some kind of explosive device in the home. We don't know what it is yet. We expect to be here all night

"What I can say is we have one person in custody for one criminal charge and we expect more charges.

"Because of the arrest, we feel there is an issue with public safety so we evacuated all the homes in the area, shut the street down, and had our special units clear the residents to make sure it's safe to finish our investigation."

It may take until tomorrow for the investigation to be completed he says. "We could be here all night,"

An OPP bomb unit is on-site.

Police request that people avoid this area.
