Fatal accident as snowmobile crashes through Lake Temagami ice

A Temagami man is dead after the snowmobile he was riding crashed through thin ice on Lake Temagami near Bell Island Thursday night.

Temiskaming OPP located the body earlier today.

Investigation revealed that the snowmobiler had gone out the previous evening and had not returned home. 

An OPP officer and a member of the Temagami Fire Department used a boat to retrieve the body from the lake, while the ground crew was assisting in pulling them to shore. 

The victim has been identified as Thomas Evans, 71.

The OPP Snowmobile, ATV and Vessel Enforcement team, the Underwater Search and Rescue Unit, the Temagami Fire Department, and the Nipissing District Emergency Medical Service responded to the call while a drone flew over the search area.

The Office of the Chief Coroner- Ontario Forensic Pathology Service is assisting with this investigation. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Dec. 16, in Sudbury to determine the cause of death.
