A full team of sledge hockey players will make its first appearance at the Ministry of Community and Safety and Correctional Services/Easter Seal Kids Skate, being held on Saturday at Memorial Gardens, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Members of the North Bay Skyhawks will join the Ice Breakers hockey team, which recently finished in top spot in their category in a competition in Windsor, at the skate.

The Ice Breakers consists of boys and girls eight through 15 who are physically challenged with cerebral palsy or spina bifida.

One of the top Ice Breakers, Jordan Mino, 15, a former Easter Seal Skate Ambassador, says playing with the Ice Breakers is like a dream come true.

In 17th year
Easter Seals in North Bay and area helps approximately 90 physically challenged boys and girls.

The skate, organized by Corrections in co-operation with supervising NHL linesman John D’Amico, is in its 17th year and gives young offenders and low-risk adult offenders the chance to contribute to society by raising funds, and skating for Easter Seal kids.

Supervised participants from Sudbury and North Bay Corrections institutions will join the community in what has become an annual event involving 1,000 or more family members and other community residents, said spokesman Colin Vezina.

“This year we hope to break the $250,000 mark in the amount of money we’ve raised overall, and all we need to attain is $7,935 to meet that goal,” Vezina said.

Opening ceremonies are at 10 a.m.
