The city is looking at making some parking changes in the New Year.

Councillor Dave Mendicino says those changes include proposed changes to parking rates and times.

"It is important to see that this council recognizes that the downtown is so important to the community," Mendicino told CKAT.

Mendicino believes the parking changes are going to help with the continued revitalization of the downtown

“One hour free parking at all pay and display machines downtown and the paid parking hours will change from 8 am – 6 pm to 8 am – 4:30 pm, ” he said.

"That will encourage more residential living in the downtown. Once everything is passed with the bylaws and changes are made there will be a 50 per cent reduction in monthly parking passes for anyone wanting to live in the downtown as well as free parking in the overnight parking garage (on McIntyre). That helps people in the winter who want to stay in the downtown."

The changes won’t become official until after they’ve explained it all to the public at a meeting next month.
