Mark King says they hope to come up with some ways to help support the struggling Gathering Place soup kitchen in North Bay.

Last week, the soup kitchen announced it had to let go several staff members and cut back meals to one a day effective September 1.

King, who is the chair of the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) says they are talking among board members on how they can help the struggling soup kitchen.

He says Dennis Chippa, the executive director, and Scott Tod, former board chair, will be attending the upcoming DNSSAB meeting in September.

"The reality in my mind is that there is no way we could possibly afford $50,000 a month operational cost," said King bluntly.

"So they had an obligation, I think, on their part, to streamline their operation, to try and figure out how to be more cost efficient. And I know it's hard for them to do that, because they're just reacting to the demand. So we'll have to see how it works out at our board level, whether or not there are options that come forward."

The Gathering Place did get a bit of good news earlier this week when it was announced that a Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser at the North Bay Davedi Club raised $11,000.00.

Gathering Place officials estimate the event fed more than 500 people.
