DNSSAB: 'By Name List' helping house those in need

Even as DNSSAB is successfully housing people — 37 so far this year — the By Name List is growing, which indicates to social services more people in need of housing and supports realize the registry can work for them

Besides the low-barrier shelter, the DNSSAB's Northern Pines campus on Chippewa Street West features a transitional housing component in the retrofitted former OPP building.

In place since the beginning of the year, the "By Name List" is a tool that helps to track and support individuals and families moving in and out of homelessness, connecting them to the most appropriate housing, services and supports, says the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB).

During the Point in Time count of homelessness conducted in October of last year, 169 individuals gave their consent to have their names added to the Nipissing District BNL and be contacted by services to begin the process of matching them to housing and supports.

To date, 37 individuals (19 per cent) registered on the BNL have been housed, with 32 of them (17 per cent) being from the original PiT count group. Once housed, those on the BNL list become “inactive,” but continue to receive support from local agencies to help them retain their housing, and are tracked for up to a year to ensure the help received has provided long-term stability from homelessness.

Mark King, Chair of the DNSSAB says the BNL is working to get people housed in Nipissing District. “We’re very excited that the By Name List tool appears to be working well, and the fact that the BNL is growing, even while we’re housing people, indicates that more people needing housing and supports realize this registry can work for them.”

Community partner agencies that are members of Coordinated Access Nipissing have continued to add the names of other households experiencing homelessness since the PiT Count and the list has risen to 193 individuals.
