With above-average daytime temperatures predicted for the region through to May, the warming centre at 579 Fraser Street will close on March 31.

District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) spokeswoman Marianne Zadra says daytime temperatures are not predicted to be excessively cold.

The lease ends at the end of the month, but there is a provision to extend into April if unseasonably cold temperatures warrant it.

The facility opened on November 1 and operated daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., providing access to bathrooms and showers, laundry, food, and shelter during the cold winter months.

"In addition to the warming services, valuable referrals and connections to other services were also provided," says Zadra. "To date, 282 individuals attended the warming centre since opening."

“Special thanks go to The Gathering Place and their staff for stepping in to operate the warming centre this year and helping so many people get out of the cold,” says Mark King, Chair of the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board.

Planning is underway for warming centre services for next winter with a target opening date of November 1, at a yet-to-be-determined location.
