Connie Hergott is known as someone who truly embodies the spirit of community building. Through her passion, encouragement and support for others, she has played a pivotal role in expanding North Bay’s mountain biking community.

Her dedication certainly makes her a deserving recipient of this year’s Sports and Recreation award.

“It’s very humbling,” Hergott said when she heard the news. “It also makes me aware that I could not have received this award without the great community of women riders that I’ve built. It’s definitely been a group effort.”

“I’m proud to sit back and look at the growth of cycling in our community and all of the success stories we’re having. It’s very impressive,” she said.

Hergott has focused her efforts on encouraging more women and youth to start mountain biking, which has helped to diversify the sport while creating a sense of unity at the same time.

Through her leadership and encouragement, she has broken down barriers and empowered women to embrace the thrill of the sport, creating a supportive sports environment within the North Bay community.

“Connie's unwavering commitment to her community is evident in her role as the glue that binds the ladies' mountain biking community in North Bay together. She exemplifies the qualities of a true community builder through her passion, leadership, and unwavering dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others,” said Shona Camirand, member of the OPP and fellow mountain biker.

Hergott hopes to continue to make mountain biking accessible to the community and to put North Bay on the map as a tourism destination for mountain biking.

“This award signifies that we’re just scratching the surface and there's way more work to be done to support mountain biking,” she added.

The Sports and Recreation award goes to an individual or group that has contributed to the strength of sport in the community. They have inspired people (a coach), established a program (a league or playground), mentored a team or an individual to extraordinary accomplishment, or set an example for many to carry in their hearts.

Congratulations, Connie!
