Cobalt Public School on fire. Major damage

'It looks like the building will be finished'

Volunteer firefighters were still trying to control a fire at the Cobalt Public School early this afternoon.

The school has been vacant since 2013.

Cobalt Mayor George Othmer tells BayToday the fire started this morning.

"It's on fire right now actually. (12:30 p.m.) It started this morning  It looks like the building will be finished.

"It's a two-story building and it started on the bottom floor and worked its way up to the second floor."

The blaze started shortly after 10 a.m.

Temiskaming OPP, the Temiskaming District Emergency Medical Service, the Cobalt, Temiskaming Shores, Coleman, and the Latchford Fire Departments responded to the fire on Dunning Drive in Cobalt.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshall.

The area remains closed and it is unknown when it will re-open.

OPP is advising motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area at Prospect Ave, between Dunning and Cobalt Street.
