City clears one outdoor rink for use with more to follow

In a sure sign of winter, City of North Bay crews have opened one of its outdoor ice rinks and will be readying other rinks throughout the community as soon as the weather allows.

With some snow remaining in the Airport Hill area, crews have managed this week to get the Greenhill Playground Rink operational, making it the first of the City’s outdoor ice rinks to open for the season.

Cooler weather and snow are in the forecast and crews are hopeful they will be able to open more rinks over the next couple of weeks. The City plans to maintain a total of 11 outdoor rinks this winter, including the Lee Park Skating Trail and the Circle Lake Rink, which was closed last season due to construction.

Weather permitting, City crews will also again be utilizing a portion of the Kate Pace Way to maintain a 2.8-kilometre winter trail between Lee Park and Marshall Avenue for walking, snowshoeing and other non-motorized recreational activities.

The Lee Park Skating Trail is again expected to open in phases, and once ready, trail lights will operate daily from dusk until 10 p.m. Heated washrooms at Lee Park will be available daily for skaters and trail users between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.
