Mayor Peter Chirico says the price tag for the proposed arena is too high.

The Community and Recreation Ad Hoc Committee to determine the fate of the new arena met this morning with no statement for Chair Lana Mitchell, but Mayor Peter Chirico made his position clear today.

"It's unaffordable for our community at that price," he told BayToday while at a bridge opening event this morning following the committee meeting.

the Mayor's Boardroom at City Hall.

The location and budget were on the agenda and there is another scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 a.m.

Councillor Mitchell, the chair of council's infrastructure and operations committee, heads the community and recreation centre ad hoc committee. An email from BayToday to Mitchell asking for additional information was not returned.

Its other members are Councillors Mac Bain, Gary Gardiner, Jamie Lowery and Chris Mayne. Chirico is an ex-officio member of the committee and will only vote in the event of a tie, but says the committee will speak as one voice once a decision is made.

The committee is tasked to make a decision in 30 days...meaning Monday, Sept. 18.
