UPDATED: Chippewa secondary school closed due to gas leak

‘All students and staff are to remain at home’

Chippewa Secondary School will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 29, but it's not because of a snow day.

Around 6:50 a.m. parents and students were alerted by the administration that the school would be closed due to a gas leak.

"All students and staff are to remain at home," the message from Chippewa Secondary School stated.

"We will update you as soon as possible."

The school sent emails and multiple phone voicemail messages to ensure all parents were aware of the situation.

At the school this morning, only an Enbridge Gas vehicle was parked on the east side of the school with no sign of the fire department and no portion of Chippewa Street was blocked off.

The Enbridge Gas official on the scene would not give any comment on the cause of the leak.

However, around 8 a.m. Greg Saunders, deputy fire chief released a statement.

"At just after 6 a.m. fire crews responded to a report of a gas leak at 539 Chippewa Street West and a significant leak was discovered," Saunders stated via email.

"The building was evacuated and closed by firefighting personnel.  Representatives from Enbridge Gas arrived on-scene and determined that the school had to remain closed until the leak could be remedied."

Saunders adds the gas to the school has been shut off and secured.

School officials sent a message Thursday afternoon indicating the school would be open for school on Friday.
