Police have laid charges in connection with that horrific accident that occurred new year's day on Highway 17.
On January 1, just before 9 a.m. police were called to a single motor vehicle accident in the westbound lanes of Highway 17, near the Highway 144 interchange, Greater Sudbury.
Investigation revealed the westbound car left the travelled portion of the highway and struck a rock-cut.
Three passengers, ages 11, 10 and 6 died as a result. A 10-year-old passenger suffered life-altering injuries and remains in hospital in Toronto.
At the time they were identified as brothers Destiny Osagie, 11 and Flourish Osagie, 10. Their sister, Britney Osagie, 6, was taken to hospital but succumbed to her injuries. All were children of the woman who was driving the vehicle.
Another 10-year-old male passenger was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. That boy is a friend of the family and his mother was also a passenger in the car, described as a 2007 Honda Accord.
The driver, and mother of the children, was not injured and the front seat passenger suffered minor injuries. Speed and lack of seat belt use were factors in the deaths say police.
Police at the time said all occupants of the vehicle were from Chelmsford, near Sudbury.
The 46-year-old driver, Uche Osagie, from Toronto, is been charged with:
- Three counts of careless driving causing death
- Careless driving causing bodily harm
Osagie is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on July 6.
