Here’s some ‘sound’ advice from North Bay Fire & Emergency Services; this Saturday evening when you “Change your Clock – Change your Battery.” Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and batteries replaced every six months to ensure they are in top working condition; as well, smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. The law requires that there be a working smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Smoke alarms detect smoke very early which will provide you and your family the precious seconds needed to safely escape from your home. Take this opportunity to talk to your family about your home fire escape plan...What to do if your main exit is blocked by fire? Who will assist small children and those who require assistance? Where is your family’s meeting place? Having a fire escape plan and working smoke alarms may one day save you and your family’s life.

Did you know?
Homes with working smoke alarms have an almost 50% lower death rate in fire instances than homes without. However, in Ontario, the homes where people have died and smoke alarms were present, 85% did not have a functioning smoke alarm because of dead or missing batteries.
