Well-known local health activist Nancy Jacko passed away Wednesday at the age of 70.
"Nancy was an exceptional person with a strong sense of community and passion for her work in the healthcare field," says her obituary. "Her notable professional accomplishments garnered her many impressive honours, including the Influential Women of Northern Ontario Award for the Public Sector in 2011. She was also recognized in 2019 by the Canadian College of Health Leaders of North Eastern Ontario as a Difference Maker in the field of healthcare.
Most recently Nancy received the Davedi Order of Merit for her outstanding contribution to the healthcare field in North Bay.
Nancy proudly served as Chair of the Board of the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit until this past November and was a Governor of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University until her untimely passing.
"Nancy always said nursing was the best job in the world as she prepared to celebrate her 50th year in the profession," says the obituary. "When she and husband Bill moved to North Bay in 1980, she began her career at the Civic Hospital and retired after 36 years as VP Planning, Partnership, and Professional Practice and Chief Nursing Executive. She was so very proud of the organization and all the people who worked there."
