Winter is set to become much more hospitable – Le Carnaval is coming soon.
The popular festival, organized by Les Compagnons des Francs Loisirs, is primed for an exciting 62nd year with activities and celebrations planned from Feb. 2 to Feb. 8. However, some events are planned for as early as today – Square Dance Party at the Davedi Club at 7 p.m. – so be sure to check the event website for the full roster.
Arnaud Claude, the executive director of North Bay’s Le Carnaval, speaking of last year’s festival, noted “It was exceptional. The response we got from the community was out of this world.”
This morning, Claude and other organizers held a conference at their office at 176 Lakeshore, to announce the upcoming festivities. Yes, Bonhomme was there too, and was in high spirits, eager for his favourite time of year. When Claude mentioned some of the scheduled dances coming up, Bonhomme was quick to break out a little jig in anticipation.
Clearly, Bonhomme is ready to celebrate, and there will be plenty of chances to do just that.
Carnaval officially launches on Sunday, Feb. 2 at North Bay’s Lee Park between 4 and 6 p.m. Prepare for skating, sliding, various games, dog sled rides and some fireworks to close the night. Be sure to say hello to Bonhomme, as he’ll be eager to see you again.
Another highlight is a concert from Michel Lalonde on Thursday, Feb. 13 at the East Ferris Community Centre in Astorville. There are so many events scheduled, from an astronomy evening to cooking demonstrations, that you’d be wise to keep a copy of Le Carnaval’s schedule on your phone. It can be found on Les Compagnon des Francs Loisirs’ website.

Claude said, “We had an amazing Carnaval last year. I think we got people excited about it and now they want to take part again. People are so engaged and enjoy participating in the events, and I cannot thank the community enough.”
Claude added, “I hope to have everyone back again this year, and I hope everything is as good as what they expect it to be.”
