The McIntyre St. side of the Capitol Centre will have a giant mural painted on it. Jeff Turl/BayToday.

The 90-year-old Capitol Centre building will be illuminated with red lights in its front facade as part of the LIGHT UP LIVE / Day of Visibility event.

This grass roots, national event is intended to shine a light on a $100 billion dollar industry in Canada that remains dark since the pandemic began.

Performing arts centres were among the first to shut down and will be last to reopen.

Venues across the country will light up their dark theatres, concert halls, convention centres and festival grounds with red lights to illuminate the financial devastation of an industry gone dark.

The Light Up Live/Day of Visibility movement is requesting:

  • that the government recognize our industry has been devastated by the effects of COVID-19, and there is no set date for return
  • continued financial support for live event workers until the industry is back to work
  • assistance for companies throughout the supply chain who work to create, produce, manufacture and support the live event industry

Some Capitol Centre staff will be on hand from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on September 22 outside of the building and will broadcast via Facebook live to allow for online viewing. Online supporters will also be provided with opportunities to share awareness via the Capitol Centre's social media channels.

Organizers encourage people who happen to be out driving by to honk their support as they drive by the lit-up building on Main Street.
