Canadore Sports Facility project still moving forward

“The study is sitting with the two proponents and their final submissions are due March 29th.”

A project which could see a new sports facility, including a twin ice pad behind the Canadore College Commerce Court Campus is still moving along.

Canadore is down to the final two candidates, who would likely be partners with the school, and the city of North Bay in the P3 project.

The school was expected to announce the winning bidder by late in 2015, but Canadore Communications and Public Relations Director Jessica Charette told BayToday.ca that a geotechnical study of the land in question had to be completed first.

“The Geotech Study was completed with no surprises,” said Charette.

“The study is sitting with the two proponents and their final submissions are due March 29th.”

The word of the project first got out in January of 2015, when Canadore College put out an addendum seeking a company to build on their property behind the Commerce Court Campus - right next door to the aging Pete Palangio twin pad arena.

With Sports Tourism on the front burner with the city of North Bay, high profile local hockey officials like Battalion head coach Stan Butler believe a new arena would be a great addition to the newly renovated Gardens and help generate more business for the city long term.

“We only have one rink in town, Memorial Gardens, that is 200 x 85 and if they can put two pads at Canadore and make them 200 x 85 then to have three rinks that close together that you can run tournaments, this could become a real tournament hub,” Butler stated in an interview last spring.
