Saturday, Dec. 2 marks the return of the annual Callander Lights Up Christmas event, which takes place in Centennial Park. The lights turn on at 5 p.m. after a short speech by Mayor Robb Noon.
Not only will you be treated to a light display but Lynn Blunt will be performing seasonal favourites, and the hot chocolate will be pouring, free for those who attend. The horses won’t be making it out this year, so prepare yourself for that, but at 7 p.m., there will be a free family movie for the kids screening at the Community Centre at 1984 Swale St.
The choir from M.T. Davidson Public School will also fill the park with song, which is always a hit with the holiday fans. As is the arrival of Santa Claus, who is coming to town early for a visit with the kids.
“Many of our residents come out every year,” Mayor Noon said, “they look forward to it. Obviously, it’s not as big as FunFest, but there’s always a good turnout, and you see a lot of the same people.”

As an outdoor winter event on the shore of Callander Bay, “it’s always dependent on the weather” on how many people come out. “We’re hoping for a milder day on Saturday,” Noon said. So far, the weather for Saturday evening should be fine, with lows of minus seven, slight wind gusts, with a 30 per cent chance of snow.
As for the lights, Mayor Noon mentioned there will be about 100 strands, each 25 feet long, which by his approximation adds up to about 2,500 lights that will be shining down on Centennial Park.
