Broadcast pioneer/educator passes

A man who was well known for his work in radio, television and education, Sid Tomkins has passed away at the age of 81.

Tomkins died peacefully at the North Bay Regional Health Centre, Saturday, September 28.

He was a lifetime resident of North Bay and began his career as a technician, announcer and then manager at CKGN-TV, later CKNY.

After receiving his Master's Degree from Queens University, he became a professor at Canadore College from which, in 1994, he retired as Dean of Applied Arts.

He was the founding president of CHUR Radio (KISS 100.5 FM) in North Bay which made it to air on August 1985. 

Tomkins participated in several community-minded organizations, including Kinsmen, Rotary, City Council, Hydro Commission, School Board Trustee, Society of Motion Pictures and Television, Manager of Media Relations for the Ontario Winter Games, and Board of Governors for TV Ontario. He was a lifetime member of the North Bay Musicians and Entertainers Assoc. as well as the Canadian Assoc. of Broadcasters.

Family and friends may pay their respects at McGuinty Funeral Home tomorrow (Thursday, October 3) from 2 to 4 p.m and 7 to 9 p.m..

A funeral service will be conducted in the McGuinty Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, October 4, at 10 a,m.
