A part of the soul of Powassan died this week with the passing Sunday of Hugh Smith at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. He was 67.
Smith was a well known and respected school teacher who used his retirement years for the betterment of his community. He served as Powassan’s first and only Town Crier.
"It's a huge loss for our community," Powassan Mayor Peter McIsaac told BayToday. "He was a volunteer, not just as a town crier. He did a lot in the community. People like him don't come along very often.
"He was a phenomenal town crier. He was so well prepared and did such a great job that we'll never be able to find anyone to replace him."
Smith was also a gardener, teacher, reporter, sailor, photographer (who developed his own pics back in the day), barbershop quartet singer, comedic actor with Powassan Players, musician (played more than a dozen instruments), historical society and horticultural society member, used book store (in the Powassan United Church) volunteer manager, organist for the Chisholm United Church for over 50 years, cat lover, monthly performer at Eastholme and Lady Isabelle Nursing Homes were among the many hats he wore.
He was often seen driving about town in his favourite toy – his 1953 Willys Jeep, top down and having a ball! (see our gallery)
Hugh Smith died peacefully, with his family by his side.
The Smith family will receive visitors at the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan today (Thursday) from 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at Paul Funeral Home on Friday, October 30 at 2 p.m.
Memorial donations to Chisholm United Church or All Heart Pet Rescue are suggested.
