A local minor hockey team has gathered a huge haul of socks which were donated recently to the North Bay Warming Centre.

The North Bay Peewee AA Minor Trappers set up bins in both Pete Palangio Arena and West Ferris Arena since the middle of December.

This weekend they handed off their collection of 435 pairs during dryland training.

"It’s a great donation and much needed," stated Dennis Chippa, who is the Executive Director of the Gathering Place soup kitchen which also acts as a Warming Centre along Cassells Street.

"Many of the folks we see haven’t got the best footwear and their feet get wet and cold constantly. That gift of socks is so very valuable to all of them. It helps keep them healthy in these cold wet months.

"It’s also just fabulous that it came from a group of youngsters because it taught them a little about maybe a part of the community they live in they may not have known about."
