A local 12-year-old boy is helping the cancer cause in two ways.
Charlie Pipe raised more than $800 on a donation page and then, at the end of his grade six graduation last Thursday, got his long hair chopped off at Shear Oasis, where the locks will be sent away to make a wig for a cancer patient.
“Charlie was nervous at first, but totally loves his new short hair and is proud that he will be helping a cancer patient. He couldn't wait to show his friends and neighbours,” said his dad Bob Pipe after the big chop.
While Charlie was nervous, he is now excited about his new short hairdo.
"It feels a bit weird but awesome," said Charlie.
"The staff at Shear Oasis were really good. Thank you to everyone who donated money and supported me. I'm looking forward to swimming with my new short hair; I love how fast it dries."
Charlie started the idea to raise money for cancer research after seeing a family friend's son and his Grandpa’s wife both pass away from cancer.
“There’s lots of children, families and adults suffering from cancer and it’s very sad for them and if somebody in your family dies from cancer it’s just like a tragedy,” said Charlie prior to his hair cut.
Charlie Pipe is at about $840 in funds raised and expects to keep the donation page open until the middle of July.
