Beware the blowing snow and freezing rain

Very low to nil visibility in blowing snow will continue Sunday night as the winds shift into the northwest

It's going to turn nasty Sunday afternoon with blowing snow and freezing rain.

Environment Canada has issued a blowing snow advisory for:

  • North Bay - West Nipissing
  • Greater Sudbury and vicinity,
  • New Liskeard - Temagami
  • Deep River - Whitney - Eastern Algonquin Park

Strong and gusty southwesterly winds will whip up freshly fallen snow and cause sudden near zero visibility in blowing snow in many areas beginning this afternoon. 

Very low to nil visibility in blowing snow will continue Sunday night as the winds shift into the northwest.

Winds and blowing snow will slowly ease on Monday.

Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Meanwhile, a freezing rain warning continues for:

  • North Bay - West Nipissing,
  • New Liskeard - Temagami

But the freezing rain warning has ended for: Greater Sudbury and vicinity.

Freezing rain this morning. but the rain that is affecting northeastern Ontario this morning will gradually change to rain or snow later this morning.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Utility outages may occur.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.

Also a snow squall warning for:

  • Burk's Falls - Bayfield Inlet,
  • Huntsville - Baysville

Hazardous snow squalls with near blizzard conditions developing this afternoon.

Temperatures will plummet through the day behind a strong cold front. Snow squalls will develop this afternoon and combine with very strong westerly winds with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h to produce near zero visibility at times.

The snowfall amounts will be highly variable, with 5 to 15 cm possible by Monday.

The most hazardous conditions are expected late this afternoon and tonight but will ease through Monday as winds weaken. Road closures are possible.

Ontario Hydro reports and outage affecting 20 homes just south of South River.
