Residents of Mattawa and the Algonquin Nursing Home gathered today with the North East Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN) management to celebrate the start of construction to redevelop the long-term care home.

It will become part of a health hub which will include physician and physiotherapy clinics, hospital, hospice and respite and interim beds, among other services says a news release from the organization.

“This redevelopment is about providing quality care for seniors and ensuring their new home meets the highest safety and design standards,” said Louise Paquette, CEO, NE LHIN. “We are very pleased that Algonquin Nursing Home and the community of Mattawa are among the first in the province to move forward with their long-term care home redevelopment.”

The new nursing home is located in close proximity to other care facilities in the community including the hospital, a Family Health Team, and Canadian Mental Health Association office.

“This new nursing home will greatly benefit the community with access to quality health services in our region, but most importantly, it is built with the residents and seniors of the Mattawa and area in mind,” said Jérémy Stevenson, President of the Mattawa Hospital and Administrator of the Algonquin Nursing Home.

“They will receive the highest quality of long-term care services, in the highest facility standards in Ontario, and it builds on the strong reputation of the Algonquin Nursing Home.”

Algonquin Nursing Home is one of 20 homes in the NE LHIN area that will be redeveloped over the next eight years.

Algonquin’s total redevelopment cost is approximately $17.5 million. The redeveloped home will provide 73 residents with increased access to health care services as they’ll be on a single site, more privacy, larger bedrooms, enhanced infection control processes, better access to bathrooms, and an improved dining space.
