Air quality in North Bay has suffered as smoke from forest fires hangs over the city.

The air quality index for the North Bay area sits at 142 this morning. meaning it is hazardous to at-risk individuals. Members of sensitive groups may experience health effects if they are exposed for 24 hours. The general public is not likely to be affected.

A Special Air Quality Statement is still in effect for:

  • North Bay - West Nipissing
  • Powassan - Mattawa
  • South River - Burk's Falls
  • Huntsville - Parry Sound
  • Témiscamingue

Very high levels of air pollution have developed due to smoke from forest fires.

Smoke plumes from forest fires in Quebec and northeastern Ontario will continue to affect the area, resulting in deteriorated air quality. Conditions are expected to improve later today.

There are currently 21 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region. Of these, eight are not under control, two are being held, 10 fires are under control and one is being observed.

There have been no new fires confirmed Tuesday in the region.

Areas south of Timmins are showing a low hazard. North of Timmins the hazard fluctuates from low to extreme.

 

A restricted fire zone remains in effect for the entire fire region of Ontario. Outdoor fires are banned.
