Volunteers are back in the kitchen making the famous West Ferris Legion meat pies, a fundraising tradition for over three decades.
“They baked 300 pies to raise money to send the Colour Party to Niagara Falls for its convention, and they’ve been baking them ever since,” explained Gord Sunstrum who gets things rolling starting at 5 a.m. on bake days.
“It takes me until February to get my clock adjusted again,” laughed Sunstrum.
Pies are being picked up now for Thanksgiving, and some are ahead of the game stocking the freezer with pies for Christmas.
Volunteers are busy behind the scenes assembling and baking 252 pies at each one of the twice-a-week bake sessions.
The options are regular, garlic, and extra-garlic meat pies.
“That’s why when you enter the Legion on bake days all you can smell is garlic,” laughed Laughlin Trowseale, Branch 599 president.
By the time everything is said and done, 55 hundred meat pies will have been baked and sold.
“The funds actually go into our general account. That helps us to maintain the building, pay the bills, pay the wages, and keep the lights on and the doors open. So, it is basically our way of supporting the facility,” explained Trowseale.
There at two ways to get a pie on your dinner table.
“We love walk-ins but in order to get your pies, please phone ahead even if you don’t want them today, maybe you want them next week or whatever, tell us the date that you want them and we’ll get your name on the list the bake before, so we can put them in the freezer,” shared Sunstrum.
The Legion has already received calls for pies from out-of-town residents who will be in the area for Thanksgiving.
“The first bake was the 23rd of September, the last bake date is December 9th", said the Legion President.
