In 2013, after an 11-season absence, the Ontario Hockey League returned to North Bay as the Battalion relocated from Brampton and made an instant impact as the Troops captured the Eastern Conference championship in 2013-14 and lost to the Guelph Storm in the OHL final.

The North Bay Battalion has brought future NHL players back to the Gateway City with a number of former Battalion players graduating to the pro ranks, including most recently, Justin Brazeau of the Boston Bruins joins two-time Stanley Cup champion Barclay Goodrow of the New York Rangers and World Champion Nick Paul of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It has also allowed hockey fans in North Bay to have seen top current NHL stars as visitors to North Bay Memorial Gardens, including Connor McDavid, Mitch Marner, Aaron Ekblad and Andrei Svechnikov.

The Troops enter the 2024-25 season as two-time defending Central Division champions and in both campaigns advanced to the Eastern Conference Championship series before losing to the Hamilton Bulldogs and Peterborough Petes, the latter a tough seven-game series defeat with a 3-2 loss on home ice in game 7.

The Battalion returns a strong core with reigning OHL Goaltender of the Year Dom DiVincentiis (Winnipeg Jets) leading the way. Star defencemen Ty Nelson (Seattle Kraken) and Tnias Mathurin (Detroit Red Wings) will anchor the blueline, while returning forwards include veterans Owen Van Steensel, Dalyn Wakely and Anthony Romani.
