The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources, the Business Partner (BP) collaborates with all levels of employees (“Clients”). The BP actively supports discussions and provides best practice knowledge in their field ensuring efficient and consistent compliance with Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), Employment Agreements, policies and legislation.

Key Deliverables

  • Counsels and assists clients on issues that impact culture. This includes providing training and interpretation on matters related to the application of legislation such as the Employment Standards Act and the Human Rights Code, Company policies and procedures, and Employee Conduct Rules (ECRs).
  • Partners with client groups on various P&C processes such as job design, organizational structure, lines of sequence, etc.
  • Provides coaching and guidance on matters related to conflict resolution, attendance management, goal setting and performance management, succession planning and talent management, organizational change and discipline.
  • Assists in facilitating positive Labour Relations (LR) between the Company and Unions. This involves providing counsel to Managers and Supervisors on issues related to the grievance process and its administration. Provides recommendations to preempt grievances.
  • Conducts investigations, summarizes findings and recommends and assists with implementing solutions.
  • Prepares for and attends arbitration cases as required.
  • Assists with contract negotiations by researching issues and providing relevant information and support throughout the process.
  • Leads recruitment and onboarding efforts to source quality individuals to support Algoma’s short, medium and long-term needs.
  • Leads/participates on special projects as assigned.

Core Competencies and Skills Required

  • University degree or College diploma in HR or Business Administration OR equivalent work experience
  • 3 years HR/LR experience in unionized environment is required
  • HR/LR experience in a unionized industrial/manufacturing environment is preferred
  • Knowledge of Labour/Employment legislation
  • HR experience interpreting and advising on Collecting Bargaining Agreements
  • Demonstrated negotiation and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated strong time management skills
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • High level of discretion
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with improving systems and processes
  • Project management skills
  • Experience with MS Excel and PowerPoint, SAP.

This is a temporary exempt position.

Job Location: on-site in Sault Ste. Marie, ON
