This January marks a remarkable milestone in the history of the Groves Hospital Volunteer Association (GHVA): 72 years since the opening of its first not-for-profit thrift store in 1953! While the GHVA itself has been a pillar of community support for even longer, it was in January 1953 that the organization launched the Fergus Opportunity Shop in downtown Fergus, beginning a proud tradition of fundraising through thrift.
Today, the legacy of that first shop lives on in New to You, a vibrant community hub and a vital supporter of Groves Memorial Community Hospital. For over seven decades, GHVA’s thrift stores have been a testament to the power of community, offering affordable finds for shoppers, a welcoming place for volunteers, and critical funding for local healthcare initiatives.
We are deeply grateful to the generations of volunteers, donors, and shoppers who have made 72 years of thrift possible. Your dedication and support have strengthened our community and provided invaluable aid to Groves Hospital.
